Manchester United hold talks with Jorginho’s agent as Liverpool attempt transfer hijack

MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their move for Napoli ace Jorginho.

A new midfielder is at the top of Jose Mourinho’s summer wish list and the Italy international has emerged as a target. According to the Daily Star, Old Trafford chiefs held talks with Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos. It is claimed the chat took place at the Etihad Stadium on Friday night while Jorginho played for Italy against Argentina. The Red Devils face competition from two transfer rivals, however. Manchester City representatives also held discussions about Jorginho during the international friendly on their patch. Liverpool have caught wind of the competition and have been pushing to hold their own talks during the weekend. Jurgen Klopp has identified Jorginho as a potential replacement for Emre Can, who looks set to leave Anfield when his contract expires this summer. Jorginho has established himself as one of Serie A’s leading midfielders since joining from Verona in 2014. He has chipped in with four goals and four assists this term and would fill the void at United left by the retiring Michael Carrick.
Understandably, Napoli are eager to keep Jorginho on their books. According to the Daily Star, the Italian outfit have opened talks on a contract extension to hike his pay to £90,000-a-week. Napoli have reportedly held talks with Sampdoria over a move for Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira if Jorginho does leave. But, earlier this week, Santos insisted United had not initiated contact for the 26-year-old. He said: “My client is a good kid, he is focused on fighting for the Scudetto with his club and plays for one of the top national teams in the world.
