Asensio: “I don't think Zidane is unfair to me he does what he thinks is right”

Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio dismissed suggestions Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was unfair for dropping him from the European champions' starting XI.

Asensio has established himself as one of Europe's most promising midfielders since joining Madrid from Mallorca in 2014. “That [unfair] is not the word,” Asensio said. “It was my fault and my responsibility when I was out of the team. The form of the team was not so good and I did not have so many minutes,” he added. Now, Asensio has been playing more minutes lately, becoming one of Real Madrid’s key starters alongside Lucas Vazquez. “Now he is giving me confidence. I think that both in attack and in defence we are more compact and we have to continue like this and maintain this line. We are in a very good place,” said the attacker. Asensio revealed that his position with Spain is different from the one he plays with Real Madrid.

“I’m more of a winger for Spain while in Madrid I can impact the game behind the strikers too, having a bit more freedom,” he explained. Asensio will surely feature in Spain’s list to play the 2018 FIFA World Cup, barring any unlucky injury. His role with Real Madrid against Juventus will be very interesting to see but it looks like he could be a starter when Los Blancos face the Italian side.
