United ready to spend £45m on Brazilian utility man from Monaco

Jose Mourinho was linked with the versatile Brazilian throughout the January transfer window. But United focused instead on landing attacking talent in the form of Chile star Alexis Sanchez. According to respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Mourinho will now pursue Fabinho in the summer. Last summer he claimed a deal was close to being done but United signed Nemanja Matic instead. As a player who can play at both right-back and defensive midfield, Fabinho would be a useful addition to the Old Trafford outfit. The 24-year-old won Ligue 1 with Monaco last season having failed to make the grade at Real Madrid. But Fabinho has publicly spoken of his desire to leave the French champions. It may be that Mourinho would use Fabinho in both roles, though speculation elsewhere suggests United could be looking at other targets as options in midfield. The Manchester Evening News recently linked United with an interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal, as well as Napoli’s Jorginho and Borussia Dortmund starlet Julian Weigl. Back in January, the Daily Mirror also linked United with a possible move for Nice midfielder Jean Seri, though that deal never materialised. Di Marzio’s report is somewhat vague, but describes Fabinho as ‘very close’ to United as talks begin after their opening bid, and concluding that the player’s future could be in the Premier League.
